5K Fugitive Run, August 29, 2009
On August 29th, 2009 the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a 5K road race to benefit a local charity. This inaugural road race, appropriately coined as the “Cumberland County Sheriff’s 5K Fugitive Run” will be held in Gorham, Maine.
In an effort to promote community involvement and interaction, as well as raising money for a good cause, the Sheriff’s Office has chosen this unique racing initiative. This event will provide many of the amenities found at other large road races and will attract both runners and walkers alike. The race will have strong public safety participation, with the presentation of the “Sheriff’s Cup” to the public safety agency (police, fire/rescue, corrections) with the best cumulative finishing times (minimum of 3 runners to qualify for trophy). Awards will also be given to the top 3 civilian finishers in 8 different age categories.
This year, the Sheriff’s Office has selected Sexual Assault Response Services of Southern Maine (SARSSM) as its charitable recipient. SARS is a non-profit agency that supports survivors of sexual assault. SARS provides many forms of victim advocacy, including a confidential 24-hour Crisis and Support Line and a Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) to victims and survivors of sexual assault, their family and friends, and anyone affected by sexual violence. These volunteers provide support, advocacy, crisis intervention, and can accompany victims to the hospital, police stations, and the courts.
