[ARCHIVED] Stolen Vehicle Incident

Incident Date:  2/29/20

Incident Time: 12:51AM

Incident Location: Route 100/202 Gray, New Gloucester, Auburn

On the above date and time, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office was involved in vehicle pursuit, with speeds ranging from 25 to 90mph. The pursuit began when a Deputy was heading to an unrelated emergency and the suspect vehicle, a Silver 2013 Ford Escape began operating erratically and did not yield to the Deputy’s emergency lights. The vehicle left the roadway and then accelerated to speeds nearing 90mph. The Deputy chased the vehicle and while doing so, learned that the vehicle was stolen.

The vehicle continued through New Gloucester and into Auburn. As the vehicle continued toward the densely populated Auburn downtown, the chase was discontinued. A short time later the vehicle crashed through the intersection of Union and Center Streets in Auburn, striking the Irving/Circle K. The vehicle was totaled and the store sustained significant structural damage.

Once in custody, it was learned that the operator and his passenger were both juveniles. Their names are not being released. The operator was a 15 year old male and his passenger was a 15 year old male. The operator was evaluated at Maine Medical Center and transported to Long Creek for an unrelated warrant. He is being charged with Eluding by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and will likely be issued charges from Auburn and Portland Police Departments.

The passenger was not charged and was returned to his parents.
