On the above date and time, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and the New Gloucester Fire/EMS responded to Route #100 in the area of the Auburn line for multiple vehicle crashes due to black ice. Three separate crashes occurred within minutes of each other, none of which resulted in serious injury.
In the most serious crash, a 2017 KIA operated by Jennifer Mason, 36 years old of Sabattus rolled over after losing control on the ice-covered roadway.
Route #100 was closed down in the area for a short period of time to clear the roadway of the wreckage and to allow for State Department of Transportation to apply salt and sand to the roadway.
Icy Road conditions and Failure to Maintain Control of a Motor Vehicle are factors in the crashes. Alcohol was not a factor in these crashes. The cause of the crashes is under investigation by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and it has yet to be determined if any charges will result from these incidents.
