Incident Time: 9:11 am

Incident Location: Marston Road, Baldwin

Release Date: 3/12/2021

Release Time: 7:00 pm

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the tragic death of a 42-year old Standish woman after her vehicle went off the road in the Town of Baldwin.

On Friday 3/12/2021 at approximately 0911 hours the Sheriff’s Office, Baldwin Fire Department, and Standish EMS responded to the Marston Road in Baldwin for a report of a single-vehicle crash. Upon the arrival of law enforcement and fire personnel, a green 2004 GMC Yukon was found off the road and down an embankment. The vehicle was resting on its roof in approximately 12-18 inches of water. The water was part of a small stream, which runs next to the road.

Desiree Lessard, 42 years of age from Standish was found deceased near the vehicle. It was determined that she was the driver and only occupant of the Yukon. It appears that Desiree was able to escape the partially submerged vehicle by crawling through a rear window. She then pulled herself up onto the snow-covered embankment where she died. The exact timing of this crash has yet to be determined, but investigators believe it occurred sometime late Thursday night or early Friday morning. A local woman out walking her dog discovered her shortly after 0900am.

The crash remains under investigation and the Sheriff’s Office is working with the Office of Chief Medical Examiner to determine the exact cause and manner of Lessard’s death.

The crash occurred on an unimproved section of Marston Road, which is not plowed or maintained during the winter months. The Sheriff’s Office does not believe speed played a factor in this incident, as travel conditions were very difficult. Police continue to examine whether other factors played a role in the crash.
